As of 2022, Chipotle is majority owned by T. Rowe Price Associates. T. Rowe owns almost 9% of Chipotle. Chipotle went public in 2006 after a blockbuster IPO with shares rising 100% on the first day.

Chipotle was majority owned by McDonald’s in 2001, but McDonald’s sold all of its chipotle holdings in 2006 to focus on McDonald’s core operations.

Who Founded Chipotle?

Chipotle was founded by Steve Ells in 1993 with an $85,000 loan from his father. Using the cash flow and some external investments, the chain expanded.

In 1998, McDonald’s made a minority investment in Chipotle and by 2001, they were Chipotle’s largest owner. In 2006, Chipotle went public and in the same year, McDonald’s completely divested itself.
