Chipotle was founded by Steve Ells in 1993 with an $85,000 loan from his father. Using the cash flow and some external investments, the chain expanded.
In 1998, McDonald’s made a minority investment in Chipotle and by 2001, they were Chipotle’s largest owner. In 2006, Chipotle went public and in the same year, McDonald’s completely divested itself.
