Fact Check: When a Cockroach touches a human it runs to safety to clean itself

Recently, a reddit user shared a post in r/todayilearned subreddit about Cockroaches. The post said, “When a Cockroach touches a human it runs to safety to clean itself”. The post went viral quickly & garnered over 18,000 upvotes in less than 9 hours.

The post was equally bizzare too, as in west Cockroaches are considered a symbol of filth & dirt. Well, the cockroaches also seem to have mutual feelings about humans.

Is it true, that cokroaches feel disgusted by humans?

Cockroaches clean their bodies regularly using their antennas & legs, by running them through thier mouth. This allows them to smell food, find mates & sense danger with ease.

They do not find humans filthy or disgusting, its just a normal behaviour of cleaning oneself after coming in contact with any other living thing.

They don’t watch humans touch them & then run away of disgust.

What happens when a cockroach touches you?

Cockroaches’ outer surface contains bacteria that can make humans seriously ill. Touching Cockroaches can transmit diseases like typhoid fever & Salmonellosis.

Cockroaches also produce proteins that can cause asthama, similar to pollens. Cockroaches also defecate all over the places they touch, that’s one reason to keep them away from eateries or consumables.

Why Cockroaches Run Towards You?

Cockroaches are attracted towards light, so they’re most probably running towards the light or brightness near or behind you, instead of you.
